Wear Plaid Like It's Going Out of Fashion

Plaid. Relegated to farmyards and ‘90s sitcoms, this print has long been underestimated for its place as a chic statement in the wardrobe. Ask anyone about the flannel shirt at the back of their wardrobe, and for years, they would have denied ownership. “It’s my boyfriend’s,” or “Oh gosh, I just wear that around the house when I don’t care what I look like.”

As with most things talked about here on Eckett, we are constantly marveling at the pariahs of the fashion world that suddenly rush back to dominate our style. Plaid is the next thing to undergo that transition from reject to revival, and its happening in three key ways:

  1. HEAD TO TOE: if you’re going to make a statement, you may as well put an exclamation mark on the end. Raise the issue of plaid without hesitation, and rock the print from head to toe. Suits and co-ords are a great way to approach the issue, or a classic trench that’s been reinvented with an all-over check print.

  2. PROPORTION: the way to make the print modern is to blow up proportions. Think wide-leg plaid suit trousers paired with a sleek turtleneck and converse sneakers, or an oversized flannel shirt tucked into flare jeans and a kitten heel.

  3. JOYFUL COLOUR PALETTES: sing loud and proud about your optimistic love affair with plaid with by wearing bright palettes. Girly pinks, canary yellows and aqua blues are all trending at the moment, so incorporate into your wardrobe in a feminine dress, or, to take it a step further, clash two plaid prints together for the ultimate style party.
