I’ll say it again – nouveau milkmaid – is one of those trends that seems to have had its birth and life solely on my discover feed on Instagram. Featuring puffed up sleeves, square neck tops, floral voile prints and lacing details, covered buttons and bodice accents, this trend has been an influencer favourite. Championed by brands like With Jean, Orseund Iris, and even to an extent, the ever-present and on-trend Realisation Par, it’s all about French vibes and looks that are sweet as honey, all with a cool-girl edge that exudes heartbreaker vibes.

Now, you wouldn’t necessarily think that a trend named after an outdated farm-girl occupation would be versatile, but surprisingly, it really is. Got a date straight after work? No fuss – your straight leg denim and this top are your go-to. Pair with delicate gold jewellery and slides and you’re set – you can even add in a couple of hair clips for extra sugar-not-spice. Say you have a lunch reservation with the girls that may or may not go late into the evening: simply pair this dress with strappy, block heel sandals for your perfect day-to-night look.  

My favourite way to wear this trend is to grab your favourite nouveau milkmaid top and pair with blue denim kick-flares, beaten up sneakers, and a triangle scarf tied around your head and knotted at the bottom. Ooh lala.
